Grisons is the largest canton in Switzerland, stretching from the Rhine Valley in the north to Val Müstair in the south-east, on the border with Italy. Anyone looking for an adults-only hotel in Grisons will find one thing above all: space. Valleys such as the Engadin, Prättigau and Surselva are often far apart, each with its own altitude and pace. It is precisely this distance between the villages that makes the region appealing to couples looking for an adults-only holiday away from the crowds.
Arosa lies at the end of a winding mountain road in the Schanfigg Valley, at around 1,800 metres, surrounded by peaks and two mountain lakes. The resort has been a holiday destination for more than a hundred years and is now best known for its ski area and hiking trails. The Arosa Alpine Club is a child-free 4-star property with an infinity pool, spa and mountains as its backdrop. If you prefer somewhere smaller and more personal, the Hotel Stoffel is a chalet dating from 1919, with cosy pine-panelled rooms – an adults-only hotel that focuses on charm rather than size.
Scuol in the Lower Engadin is best known for its mineral springs; the village lies on the Inn, close to the border with Tyrol, and is considered one of Switzerland’s most traditional spa villages. The Hotel Arnica Scuol is a 3-star adults-only hotel with a spa including a sauna and steam room, a child-free retreat for anyone looking for warmth and peace after a day in the mountains.
Heading further east brings you to Samnaun, a duty-free mountain village high above the Inn Valley on the border with Tyrol. This is where you will find the LARET private Boutique Hotel, a 4-star property with a spa, massage and panoramic dining surrounded by the Swiss mountains – adults-only in one of the more remote corners of Grisons.
Brigels in the Surselva is quite different, set in a broad, green valley west of Chur. The Hotel Mulin by Amanthos is a 3-star adults-only hotel with comfortable rooms, some with their own balcony, surrounded by the open mountain landscape typical of the Surselva.
In Val Müstair, the canton’s easternmost valley and home to St John’s Abbey, Müstair lies almost on Italian soil. Here, the Wellnesshotel Liun offers an infinity pool and sauna as a 3-star adults-only hotel surrounded by the Swiss Alps, a child-free property for anyone who likes to get away from it all.
Grisons has two distinct seasons. In winter, the ski areas around Arosa and Samnaun are open, while cross-country ski trails can be found in the Engadin and Surselva. In summer, hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails open up, ranging from gentle valley walks to high-alpine routes. Between the seasons, in late spring and late autumn, Grisons can offer couples a peaceful time to travel.
Unlike the canton’s better-known resorts, such as St. Moritz and Davos, the properties featured here are located in smaller, quieter villages. If you are looking for more adults-only hotels in the mountains, you will also find them in neighbouring Tyrol and Valais, where the concept is also widespread.
Most of Grisons’ valleys can be reached from Chur, Switzerland’s oldest city and the starting point of the Rhaetian Railway. From there, trains and postbuses continue to the Engadin, Prättigau and Surselva; Arosa is served directly by its own railway line from Chur. If you are travelling by car, the more remote valleys such as Samnaun and Müstair take correspondingly longer to reach, but your destination will usually be an adults-only hotel that draws much of its appeal from this seclusion. Arosa and Scuol are the best choices for a child-free short break, as both can be reached from Zurich by public transport in just a few hours; Samnaun and Müstair are better suited to a longer stay, where the journey itself is already part of the escape.
A child-free hotel thrives on details that rarely take centre stage in a family hotel: uninterrupted peace by the pool, a restaurant without children’s-menu service, and a spa area that does not have to be divided between lane swimming and water aerobics. In Grisons, the landscape is part of the experience too: narrow valleys, rugged peaks and clear air. If you are specifically looking for nature and mountain hotels for adults, you will find them beyond Grisons too.
If you would like to keep exploring after your journey through Grisons, the Bernese Oberland also has child-free hotels at a comparable altitude, each with its own character between lakes and mountains.
